
Dr. Janice Ying is a board certified orthopedic physical therapist internationally recognized as an expert in the field of Performing Arts Medicine and specializes in the treatment of and injury prevention techniques for musicians. She is the owner and founder of Opus Physical Therapy and Performance and is currently the head Physical Therapist at The Colburn School Conservatory of Music.
She received her doctorate in physical therapy from the top-ranked program at the University of Southern California. Originally from Kansas City, MO, Dr. Ying attended Pepperdine University and received her Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance and Music Education, where she received multiple scholarships for her achievements as both a pianist and violinist. She worked professionally as a pianist for several years, performing throughout the greater Los Angeles area and the Midwest, before returning to school to complete her graduate studies. Dr. Ying completed her orthopedic residency training at Glendale Adventist Medical Center - Therapy and Wellness Center in Eagle Rock, CA.
Dr. Ying's professional interests include clinical research and the application of injury prevention techniques and rehabilitation of instrumental musicians. As a performing arts physical therapist, she specializes in the treatment of orthopedic conditions among instrumentalists. Integrating her skills in human movement analysis, as well as her extensive experience as a music performer and educator, she works with each individual artist to help them identify areas of potential stress in order to help them return to playing and performing at their pre-injury levels and prevent recurrence of injury.
She has presented at international conferences including the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting and Medical Problems of Performing Arts Symposium and is a regular lecturer and mentor for the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Orthopedic Residency. Dr. Ying currently works closely with MusiCares (Grammy Foundation) to help provide care for professional musicians in the greater Los Angeles area, and has been an invited speaker at the Recording Arts Academy on topics involving injury prevention among performing artists.
Dr. Ying is a Certified Ergonomics Assessment Specialist (CEAS), Certified Kinesiotaping Practicioner (CKTP) and Graston Technique practitioner. She also has received advanced training in manual therapy and pain science. She is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association, where is an elected officer of the Performing Arts Special Interest Group within the Orthopedic Section. Additional professional affiliations include the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Therapists (AAOMPT), and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA).
